December’s Empire State manufacturing index of -14.5 from November’s positive 9.1 maintains a recent pattern of alternating between positive and negative, with the negatives usually being larger than the positives. This outcome is the weakest since August.
The components of current month activity are mostly negative with new orders at -11.3 and employment at -8.4. Prices paid at 16.7 from 22.2 are the slowest since a matching July but prices received are marginally firmer at 11.5 from 11.2.
Six month expectations picked up to a positive 12.1 after slipping to -0.9 in November. Six month price expectations however slipped back after picking up in November.
