U.S. Trimmed Mean and Median PCE Price Indices slower in August
-
The Dallas Fed’s Trimmed Mean PCE price index at 1.92% annualized in August is similar to July’s and the third straight month below 2.0%. Yr/yr growth of 2.19% is down from 2.28% in both June and July and the slowest since August 2021.
This series did get some attention when it was reported it was a favorite of Fed Chair Warsh, though Warsh subsequently denied that he gave particular attention to it.
The Cleveland Fed’s Median PCE price index gives a similar message, with a 0.19% monthly increase and yr/yr growth slowing to 2.57% from 2.70%, also reaching its slowest since August 2021. These yr/yr rates compare to 3.0% for core PCE prices, and 2.4% for core CPI.
