The New York Fed’s March Survey of Consumer Expectations shows expectations have been lifted by the surge in energy prices, most obviously at the 1-year level, but with impacts visible at the 3-year and even 5-year levels.
The 1-year view at 3.42% from 3.00% is back at a level seen as recently as December, but the 3-year view at 3.08% from 3.00% is the highest since April 2025. The 5-year view increased to 3.05% from 2.98%, and this takes it outside a recent tight range that was capped at 3.0%, moving above even levels seen after the Russian invasion of Ukraine caused a similar bounce in energy prices.
