U.S. September Pending Home Sales - More signs of housing sector weakness
2
September’s 7.3% decline in pending home sales is the sharpest decline since December with the level a record low. This adds to growing evidence that rising mortgage rates are undermining housing demand.
The 7.3% decline may be a little exaggerated by August’s 0.3% rise having been on the firm side of trend, but with negatives seen in June and July trend is now moving lower. This follows weak October NAHB homebuilders’ data and slippage in single starts and permits in September.
Pending home sales fell in all four regions with steeper declines in the South and West which managed increases in August. Pending home sales are now down 11.3% yr/yr, the steepest yr/yr fall since August 2023.
