U.S. September Michigan CSI - Down as Middle East risks rise

September’s preliminary Michigan CSI at 47.8 from 51.7 is significantly weaker than expected and is likely led by escalating worries over the Middle East and in particular gasoline prices.
The overall index is the lowest since May’s record low.
Current conditions saw a modest dip to 50.9 from 51.9 but future expectations plunged to 45.8 from 51.5. Both are also at their lowest since May.
The 1-year inflation view saw a significant bounce to 4.6% from 4.3% though the 5-10 year view at 3.4% is only slightly up after three straight months at 3.3%. Inflation expectations are still below last year’s post-tariff highs.
