September’s JOLTS report on labor turnover makes positive reading. Openings rise by 333k, more than fully reversing a 145k decline in August. The 3 and 6 month averages are both positive and close to 100k.
Hires rose by 131k while separations rise by 144k, together consistent with weak payroll growth. However the rise in separations was more than fully due to a 321k increase in quits, which more than fully erased two straight declines. Rising quits suggest jobs are seen as available.
