U.S. May NAHB Homebuilders Index - Decline likely due to uncertainty

May’s NAHB homebuilders’ index with a decline to 34, its weakest since November 2023, comes as something of a surprise, resuming a downtrend after April corrected declines seen in February and March.
Rising bond yields are a threat to the housing market, though so too is uncertainty, and that may have been a more significant factor in April’s decline.
The monthly fall was led by the current sales index, plunging to 37 from 45, reaching its weakest since December 2022. 6 month expectations at 42 from 43 and buyer traffic at 23 from 25 saw only modest declines.
