U.S. January Construction Spending slips but Q4 revised higher
2
January construction spending at -0.3% is weaker than expected but more than fully offset by upward revisions to December, to a 0.8% increase from 0.3%, and November, to a 0.6% increase from -0.2%.
The revisions are led by private residential spending which now looks strong in Q4. This is consistent with some housing sector surveys but momentum appears to be fading in Q1.
January data showed private residential investment correcting from Q4 strength but this may be in part on weather. Private non-residential spending remains weak while public spending bounced after a marginal decline in December.
