Canada July retail sales correct lower but August seen stronger

July Canadian retail sales with a 0.7% decline are not quite as weak as the -0.8% preliminary estimate given with June’s report. The decline follows a 0.6% increase in June but the preliminary estimate for August is more positive, up by 1.3%.
The monthly data shows sales down by 0.7% overall, ex auto and ex auto and gasoline. In real terms sales fell by 1.1% but this does not fully erase a 1.6% increase in June. The preliminary estimate for August suggests underlying momentum persists.
In real terms July sales fell by 1.2% ex autos and by 0.9% ex autos and gasoline. Overall sales are up by 0.8% (not annualized) on a 3 month/3 month basis.
