Argentina: After the Midterms Defeat, Focus Returns to IMF Deal
After the crunching defeat in the midterm elections, the government announced it will present a multi-year economic plan that will be the first step toward the renegotiation with the IMF. The road toward a new deal will be rocky, at best. And there is no time to lose. We think the most we could hope for with this program is a very gradual reduction of distortive controls (capital and price controls) and fiscal imbalances. We don’t expect much progress in terms of productivity-enhancing structural reforms.
