India and Turkey in Trump’s Crosshairs

By Charu Chanana, Francesca Beausang, Kevin Harris
The U.S. has recently moved to disqualify both India and Turkey from its General System of Preferences (GSP) tariff relief program, starting more trade conflicts even as talks with China and North Korea are unresolved. The reasons offered by the U.S. were generally in keeping with U.S. law, but seem to mask considerably larger issues. The U.S. and Turkey are at odds over geopolitics, while the U.S. appears to be ramping up pressure on India in preparation for trade and other business negotiations.
